Ten Top Tips For A Healthy Summer
Summer is a time for fun, sun, and recreation. However, it’s important to stay safe and healthy throughout your various activities while you and your family are out enjoying the warm weather. So here are our top ten tips for having a wonderful, healthy summer.
1. Mind Your Timing
Whenever you plan on doing something outside, try to avoid the hot noonday sun. Go for an early morning walk as the sun is rising and the ground outside is still relatively cool from the nighttime break from the heat. Activities scheduled later in the day, near or during sunset, are also ideal, since the sun’s direct light is fading and the temperature is beginning to drop.
2. Dress Brightly
Dressing in light-colored clothes helps to deflect some of the heat from the sun’s rays. This keeps you a little cooler during the day.
3. Dress Lightly
Be sure to wear light, breathable fabrics like cotton or chiffon. Steer clear of wearing heavy, heat-trapping fabrics like leather or wool.
4. Stay Hydrated
When you do start to warm up when you’re outside, your body will try to cool you down by sweating, so make sure that you drink plenty of water to keep up with this increased sweat production.
5. Protect Your Skin
Using sunscreen and shading yourself with an umbrella or large hat can help to protect your skin from excess exposure to the sun’s heat and rays. This can help decrease your chances of minor skin issues like mild sunburn, or even major skin issues like cancer.
6. Protect Your Eyes
Give your eyes a break from the glaring sun by covering them with sunglasses or shading them with a visor. This is especially important if you have light colored eyes – blue, gray or green – which offer your retinas less natural protection.
7. Stay Cool
Try to stay out of the direct sunlight as much as you can. Sit in the shade of a tree or on a covered balcony as opposed to being in a grassy area with no trees or an asphalt parking lot with no shade. Don’t bustle around, but take a tip from people who live in hot climates – saunter or stroll.
8. Be Alert
Keep in mind that, if you’re enjoying the great weather outside, so are pickpockets, con artists, and other thieves. If someone tries to sell you something and it seems too good to be true–pass. If someone bumps into you, check that none of your belongings have gone missing–especially your wallet.
9. Keep Yourself Clean
There are many germs and bacteria that thrive when the temperatures are warm. Help keep yourself clean by washing your hands regularly and keeping hand sanitizer readily available, especially when visiting areas where there are not any sinks with hot water and soap. In particular, keep those folds and creases clean and dry with a little medicated talc, to avoid hot weather conditions like prickly heat.
10. Stay Inside
As much as you would like to be outside and enjoying the beautiful weather, one of the best ways to stay safe from all the risks that the summer can expose you to is to simply stay inside. Pay attention to weather reports and makes plans to stay indoors when temperatures reach dangerous levels, like the 90s and 100s. Staying inside can help keep you cool if air conditioning is available and there isn’t a lot of sunlight coming in through the windows. If you don’t have ac, then run a fan.
As you begin to enjoy your summer recreation, don’t let the heat get the best of you. Share these tips with your family and friends to keep them safe and healthy as you all delight in the coming days of summer.
